Our organization, the Center for Community Ownership (https://www.centerforcommunityownership.org/), provides a transition option for business owners to sell their businesses into community ownership.

I sit on the local ISU Extension Council, with that, we partner with our local economic development group, and we lost our grocery store (in the county seat) a few years ago. we're looking for info on how we might get a grocery back in town
Another ownership model option is a traditional for-profit entity that has ownership broadly distributed among community-members.
A non-profit is not the same thing as a 501c3
Yes, many states have "not for profit" statutes that are not related to IRS defined charities. It can be very confusing.
