My World, Your World, Our World: Cultural Awareness & Validation in Advising
What happens when you have students who are not originally from here, not raised here, do not know how our higher education system works?

Some of our advisees come from different parts of the world. They come into our higher education institutions as international students or as traditional freshmen who pay in-state tuition. The latter ones are first-generation immigrants who arrived here maybe at the end of their high school years or may have already started to go to college in their countries and want to continue their education here, or just simply want to start all over again in this great country of opportunities.

Whichever way they start their college experience here, they share many of the same perceptions.
They have been raised perceiving and seeing the world through the filter of their own culture, traditions, and beliefs. They try to assimilate to the American way of life and to understand how the American higher education system works but are very confused in some situations because they only know what they have seen before they came to live here, and that lack of information is accentuated if they are the first ones in their families to go to college.

Discussion, tips, and examples to enhance our cultural awareness, intercultural communication skills, and how to validate our advisees will be shared with the attendees.
